Overview

This guide provides information to help your HR staff understand the services offered by head hunters and recruiting agencies, and the pros and cons of using external recruiting resources to fill a position.  The document can also be shared with Hiring Managers when deciding whether a search will be conducted using internal or external resources.

The recruiting and hiring process can be time consuming and costly, and requires a certain level of HR experience.  Given increasing costs, tighter budgets, sky high employee replacement costs, and a shortage of top talent it’s absolutely necessary for your company to make the right hiring decisions.

Head hunters and recruitment agencies can also be costly so make you choose one that has a good track record and reliable references. Good headhunters and recruitment agencies can provide a valuable service for your company. They source job candidates on your behalf, leveraging their connections and expertise to save you time and resources and find you a strong pool of candidates.

When to use it

There are many things to consider when evaluating the recruitment and hiring options for a position, including internal recruitment resources, availability of eligible candidates in the area, and the requirements of the open position.

When considering your options, you may consider using a recruiting agency/consultant or head hunter to help fill your open position(s), particularly when:

  • There is limited time, expertise and/or resources available for the recruiting and hiring process
  • You're looking to fill a highly-specialized role for which there are likely to be few candidates
  • You have limited access to eligible candidates
  • You have a requirement for a short-term or temporary position
  • The search may span outside our immediate jurisdiction:
    • national; or
    • international - immigration and tax expertise may be required; and/or
    • the position will likely require relocation

Why use it

  • To inform HR on external services available for recruiting
  • To provide guidance to HR and Hiring Manager in deciding whether a particular search should be conducted by an external recruiting source versus conducting the search in-house.

What you risk by not using it

  • You may not have the background you need to ask the right questions or make an informed decision when it comes to selecting and hiring a headhunter or recruiting agency
  • You may end up using an expensive resource unnecessarily
  • You may end up going in circles trying to recruit internally for positions that would be better served by the expertise of recruiting professional
