Employees who are not meeting expectations deserve to know that's the case, and given opportunity to improve. These are difficult conversations for managers and employees to have, and not everyone has the courage or experience to handle them well.

Documenting the issues brings clarity to the conversation, and being able to follow a standard company process ensures objectivity and fairness.  From a legal perspective, it also proves that fair warning and opportunity to change was given, if performance does not improve and a decision is made to terminate employment.
