June 30, 2021 - ONTARIO
Moves to Step Two of Roadmap to Reopen on June 30

Ontario entered Step 2 of its Roadmap to Reopen on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. The Step Two restrictions are found in O. Reg. 263/20 and include but are not limited to:

Shifts to Step 3 of Restart Plan on July 1

The provincial state of emergency was lifted on June 30 at 11:59 p.m., signaling the end to the longest provincial state of emergency in BC’s history.

June 17, 2021 - BRITISH COLUMBIA
Launches Employer Reimbursement Program for COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave

Starting today, June 17, 2021, employers can apply for reimbursement of wages paid to workers who have taken sick leave related to COVID-19. 

The temporary reimbursement program is retroactive to May 20, when legislation was passed to ensure sick workers can stay home for up to three days without losing wages.

Updates Orders & Guidance Documents for Step 2 of Restart Plan

As of Tuesday, June 15, 2021, BC is transitioning into Step 2 of it's Restart plan which includes lifting restrictions on travel within the province.

Extends Provincial State of Emergency until June 22

BC has formally extended the provincial state of emergency through the end of the day on June 22, 2021, to allow staff to take the necessary actions to keep British Columbians safe and manage immediate concerns and COVID-19 outbreaks.

Moves to Step One of Reopening Plan on June 11

Ontario will move into Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021.

Adds $140 Million in Additional Funding for Business Recovery Grant

The BC government is adding millions in additional funding to keep the Small and Medium Sized Business Recovery Grant operating until the expected start of Step 3 of BC’s Restart plan on July 1, 2021.

June 2, 2021 - CANADA
Announces $595 Million New Canada Recovery Hiring Program

The federal government plans to spend $595 million to support employers’ hiring efforts. The proposed Canada Recovery Hiring Program would be available to eligible employers that have experienced qualifying revenue declines.

Extends Wage Subsidy (CEWS) & More Business Support Programs 

Bill C-30 also proposes to extend the Wage Subsidy (CEWS), Rent Subsidy, and Lockdown Support until September 25, 2021. These programs are currently set to expire this month.

Continues Restrictions Through Expiry of Stay-at-Home Order

While Ontario’s Stay-at-Home order expired on June 2, 2021, all other public health and workplace measures will remain in place province-wide until Ontario enters Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen.

BC Supreme Court Finds CERB Amounts Should Be Deducted from Wrongful Dismissal Damages

May 28, 2021 - MANITOBA
Extends State of Emergency for a Period of 30 Days

The Manitoba government has extended the provincewide state of emergency to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The extension came into effect Saturday, May 29 at 4 p.m. and will remain for a period of 30 days.

May 28, 2021 - BRITISH COLUMBIA
Prepares Employers for COVID-19 Paid Sick-Leave Reimbursement Program

Effective May 20, 2021, employers are required to offer employees 3 days of paid sick leave if they need to stay home as a result of circumstances related to COVID-19. The COVID-19 Sick-Leave Reimbursement Program is available to employers who have employees covered under the ESA and who do not already have a paid sick leave benefits plan.

Extends Application Deadline for Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant Program

Application intake for the Spring 2021 payment from Alberta’s Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant (SMERG) program has been extended to June 30 to allow for businesses affected by the May 2021 health orders to apply for this additional COVID relief funding.

Enacts Temporary COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave

 Bill 13 received Royal Assent on May 20, 2021, amending BC's Employment Standards Act to add two new leaves:

  • a temporary COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave; and
  • a permanent Paid Personal Illness or Injury Leave.

Opens Applications for Manitoba Pandemic Sick Leave Program

Manitoba's new Pandemic Sick Leave program provides employers with up to $600 per employee for up to 5 days for COVID-19 related sick leave. This includes time off for testing, vaccinations and side-effects, self-isolation due to COVID-19 symptoms, or care of a loved one in any of these circumstances.

Legislates Paid Leave for COVID-19 Vaccination

Manitoba has passed legislation that makes changes to the Employment Standards Code to allow workers to take a three-hour paid leave to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

Invests $100 Million in Ontario Tourism & Travel Small Business Support Grant

The Ontario government has invested $100 million in the new Ontario Tourism and Travel Small Business Support Grant which will provide one‐time payments of $10,000 to $20,000 to eligible small tourism and travel businesses struggling through the pandemic.

The Ontario government has launched a new rapid testing portal to make it easier for all essential businesses to access free rapid testing.

A one-of-a-kind partnership with Alberta Chambers of Commerce is making it easier for small and medium-sized businesses to access rapid testing kits.

Introduces Paid Leave for COVID-19 Vaccination

Manitoba has introduced changes to the Employment Standards Code that if passed, will allow workers to take a three-hour paid leave to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

Launches Manitoba Pandemic Sick Leave Program

Manitoba is launching a new Pandemic Sick Leave program to provide direct financial assistance to workers.

This voluntary program will provide employers with up to $600 per employee for up to 5 days for COVID-19 related sick leave. This includes time off for testing, vaccinations and side-effects, self-isolation due to COVID-19 symptoms, or care of a loved one in any of these circumstances.

May 4, 2021 - ALBERTA
Announces Expanded Public Health Measures Effective May 5

New restrictions come into force effective May 5, unless indicated otherwise, and will remain in place for at least three weeks. 

The following public health measures for the workplace will apply to all communities with more than 50 cases per 100,000 people and with 30 or more active cases:

The Saskatchewan Small Business Emergency Payment (SSBEP) program has been extended an additional month to support small businesses province-wide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Manitoba has boosted its investment in the Canada-Manitoba Job Grant. The total for this year will now reach $8 million to help more employers with employee training.

COVID-19: Announces 3 Days of Paid Sick Leave related to COVID-19

Bill 284 COVID-19 Putting Workers First Act, 2021 was given first, second, third reading, and Royal Assent this afternoon. This Act will require employers to provide employees with up to three days of paid leave because of certain reasons related to COVID-19, including:

COVID-19: Enacts Paid Leave for Workers to get COVID-19 Vaccine

Amendments to the Employment Standards Act providing workers with up to three hours of paid leave to get each dose of their COVID-19 vaccine are now in effect, retroactive to April 19, 2021.

COVID-19: Releases 5 Steps to Developing & Managing your COVID-19 Safety Plan

WorkSafeBC has released five steps to developing and managing your COVID-19 safety plan. There are five main steps, outined in short videos, to help employers ensure their COVID-19 safety plan is dedveloped and maintained with the right controls and communications for their business.

COVID-19: Confirms Job-Protected, Paid Leave for COVID-19 Vaccinations

Bill 71 (COVID-19 Vaccination Leave) Amendment Act, 2021 received Royal Assent April 22, 2021. The Employment Standards Code has now been amended to allow all working Albertans to access paid, job-protected leave to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19: Offers More COVID Recovery Aid for Alberta’s Small Businesses

Small businesses affected by the most recent public health orders can now access another payment of up to $10,000 from the Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant.

COVID-19: Invests $50 million in new Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant

The BC government will provide more than $50 million to help the 14,000 restaurants, bars, breweries, wineries, gyms and fitness centres affected by the March 30, 2021, provincial health orders. 

The new Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant will provide affected businesses with one-time funding to help with expenses like rent, insurance, employee wages, maintenance and utilities. It can also help cover unexpected costs, such as the purchase of perishable goods, that resulted from COVID-19 restrictions.

COVID-19: Permits WorkSafeBC to Shut Down Businesses for 10 days due to COVID-19 Transmission

WorkSafeBC inspectors have been given new enforcement powers in an effort to help stop COVID-19 transmission in workplaces across the province. 

As of Monday, April 12, WorkSafeBC inspectors to shut down a business for at least 10 days if three or more employees contract COVID-19. However, the new public health measure doesn't apply to emergency services such as police, fire, health care, grocery stores and pharmacies.

COVID-19: Enacts Provincial Emergency Stay-at-Home Order

Effective today, Thursday, April 8, 2021, the government is issuing a province-wide Stay-at-Home order that will last for 28 days and will require everyone to remain at home except for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services (including getting vaccinated), for outdoor exercise , or for work that cannot be done remotely.

COVID-19: Opens Applications for PST Rebate on Select Machinery and Equipment

The B.C. PST Rebate on Select Machinery and Equipment is a temporary provincial sales tax (PST) program to help businesses recover from the financial impacts of COVID-19.

Incorporated businesses can apply to receive an amount equal to the PST they paid between September 17, 2020 and September 30, 2021 on select machinery and equipment, including tools, furniture, computers, software and zero-emission vehicles.

COVID-19: Moves Back into Step 1 of COVID-19 Restrictions

Effective Tuesday, April 6, updated mandatory health measures go into effect for retail, fitness and performance activities.

Effective at noon on Friday, April 9, restaurants will be restricted to providing only takeout, delivery and patio service. Indoor in-person service is no longer permitted.

COVID-19: Invests $10 Million in Accelerating Manufacturing Scale-Up Grant Program

The Accelerating Manufacturing Scale-Up Grant program will support innovation and diversification in BC's manufacturing sector with a $10 million investment in small and medium-sized businesses.

The program will provide 75% of project costs to a maximum of $250,000 for individual business projects, or up to $500,000 for projects by a group of businesses.

COVID-19: Guarantees Job-protected Leave for Workers to get COVID-19 Vaccines

The BC government announced today that all part-time and full-time workers in the province will be granted job-protected leave in order to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
