Below are the key announcements from the FederalOntario and B.C. governments that touch on workplace issues for July 3, 2020.


Federal

Relief measures for Registered Pension Plans and Deferred Salary Leave Plans

The Federal Government announced proposed amendments to the Income Tax Regulations related to employers who sponsor a Registered Pension Plan ("RPP") or salary deferral leave plan for their employees.

The draft regulations provide temporary relief from various registration rules and other conditions that must be complied with under the Income Tax Regulations.

Ontario

$3 Million Invested in Health & Safety Online Training to Promote Safe Workplaces

The Ontario government is investing $3 million to provide free online health and safety training to make it easier for job seekers and workers to get essential qualifications, while practising physical distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19. 

Up to 100,000 job seekers can now take free online workplace health and safety training through Employment Ontario. Courses offered include topics such as infection control, conducting health and safety incident investigations, and preventing workplace violence and harassment.

Job seekers should contact an Employment Ontario service provider in their area to enroll.

British Columbia

Ban on Commercial Evictions Extended until End of July

British Columbia's Emergency Order protecting eligible businesses from eviction has been extended. The ban on commercial evictions will remain in place for the duration of the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistant program (CECRA) which has been extended through the month of July.
