Below are the key announcements from the Federal, Ontario, and B.C. governments that touch on workplace issues for May 27, 2020.
Federal
Amendments to Income Tax Regulations Expand Employer Eligibility for CEWS
Income Tax Regulations have been amended to allow additional employers to become eligible for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS). These additional employers include:
- Registered journalism organizations;
- Registered amateur athletic associations;
- Private schools and colleges (including institutions that offer specialized services, such as driving schools, language schools or flight schools); and
- Tax-exempt corporations that are owned by Indigenous governments that carry on business activities.
The amendments also allow additional partnership structures to qualify for the CEWS if those partnerships have Indigenous governments as members or other ineligible entities as members, and the interest of those ineligible members in the partnership does not exceed 50%.

More than Half of Canada's National Parks Reopen on June 1
On June 1, 2020, Parks Canada will begin a safe, gradual opening of some outdoor locations in national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas.
This means:
- Starting June 1, visitors will be permitted to access some trails, day use areas, and green spaces at some locations. Until then, all suspensions of visitor services and closures of facilities announced in March remain in place.
- For their own safety, visitors should not try to access locations that are closed.
- All camping facilities remain closed until at least June 21, 2020, while Parks Canada assesses whether and how these services might resume. Group activities and public events will be prohibited until further notice. All existing reservations set to take place prior to June 21, 2020, will be automatically cancelled and refunded in full.
- Highways and roadways which pass through Parks Canada places will remain open.
- Parks Canada will coordinate the resumption of services with Indigenous partners, communities, provinces and territories and respect their concerns about COVID-19.

Ontario
Emergency Orders Extended until June 9
The Ontario government has extended all emergency orders in force under s.7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.
The following emergency orders have been extended until June 9, 2020:
- Closure of Establishments
- Prohibiting Organized Public Events, Certain Gatherings
- Work Deployment Measures for Health Care Workers
- Drinking Water Systems and Sewage Works
- Electronic Service
- Work Deployment Measures in Long-Term Care Homes
- Closure of Places of Non-Essential Businesses

British Columbia
Provincial State of Emergency Extended until June 9
Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, is extending the state of emergency an additional two weeks as B.C. begins to safely and carefully restart the province.
To support continued co-ordination of B.C.’s COVID-19 response, the current state of emergency is being extended through the end of the day on June 9, 2020.
